State guides
Who may perform what, in Massachusetts, as of a date we will tell you.
A procedure-by-procedure matrix: who may perform it, what supervision is required, whether a prior examination is required, and the primary authority for every row.
Why it is not up yet
Because we publish verified rows only. Every row in the matrix is traced to a primary source — a statute, a regulation, a board policy — and rows we cannot yet trace to one are held back rather than filled in from a vendor summary. A shorter accurate matrix beats a complete speculative one, and this is the single document on our site most likely to be checked by someone qualified to check it.
Massachusetts rules in this area moved materially in 2025 and 2026, which is precisely why a matrix dated two years ago is worse than none.
What each row will carry
- The procedure, in the terms a practice actually uses
- Who may perform it
- What supervision is required, and how present it must be
- Whether a prior examination by a qualified provider is required
- The primary authority for the row
- The date that row was last verified
Standing disclaimer
This matrix is general information, not legal advice. It reflects our reading of primary sources as of the verification date shown and does not substitute for review by counsel licensed in this state. Rules in this area changed materially in 2025 and 2026.
Other states
We work first where we can be accurate. Massachusetts is in verification now; other New England states follow as clients fund them. For a practice outside a verified state we will say plainly which parts of our work are state-specific and which are not — the federal privacy and security program is the same everywhere, and it is where most practices are exposed anyway.
